Anti-Military Bias of Our College Campuses

Buzz Patterson, one of the Move America Forward's distinguished board members, has a great column this week on the anti-military bias of our college campuses.

Patterson notes the 1994 "Solomon Amendment" which as Patterson notes, tells college campuses:

"You want to prohibit the military from functioning on your campus? Fine. But
it'll cost you where it hurts the most. Your coffers."

In response, college campuses are now suing the government.

It seems academia will do whatever they can to undermine the success of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Move America Forward Announces Candlelight Vigil to Support Our Troops in Sacramento Neighborhood Where a U.S. Soldier Has Been Hanged (Again) in Effigy

(SACRAMENTO) – The national organization that supports our troops and the war against terrorism, Move America Forward (website: www.MoveAmericaForward.org), has announced a candlelight vigil (7-10 PM on Tuesday evening) to support our troops and to protest the hanging of a soldier in effigy by a couple that resides part-time in the Sacramento area.

The anti-war display hung at the home of Steve and Virginia Pearcy includes a Palestinian and Iraqi flag. This is the second time this week that the couple has hung a U.S. soldier in effigy. Earlier the couple shamefully hung a soldier by a noose with a sign that read “Your Tax Dollars at Work.” The new sign says “Bush Lied. I Died.”

Move America Forward supports the right of free speech. However, the right to speak freely does not mean all words or sentiments should be warmly embraced. The hateful messages that undermine our troops should be treated the same as the hate that spews from the likes of KKK members – we must step forward and make it clear that these voices of hate do not speak for our greater community, and that we will reject them through peaceful assemblies of the community.

WHAT: Move America Forward will conduct a candlelight vigil to support our troops and register our opposition and disgust with the hateful ‘soldier hanged in effigy’ display at the home of Steve and Virginia Pearcy.

It’s Time to De-Fund the UN

Just when you think taxpayers have been soaked enough, another ridiculous idea comes from Washington. Now they are talking about sticking the taxpayers with a loan or a loan guarantee for the United Nations to build a new headquarters for a cool $1.3 billion.

Most Americans would rather kick them out! And that is exactly what our organization, Move America Forward, is trying to do. We are tired of paying for their constant failures, corruption and anti-American attitudes – all of it expensive, I might add.

The United Nations has its hand out, seeking a complete renovation and expansion of its facilities in New York City, and they want the United States to provide the loan or loan guarantee to pay for it all.

Worse yet, the only debate in Washington seems to be whether the loan has a low interest rate or NO INTEREST at all!

The UN’s current facilities are crumbling and in violation of building, health and safety codes. If it were a private business, it would have been closed long ago. Someone recently proposed turning the building over to Donald Trump – he would turn it into moneymaking condos in no time.

The non-profit group, Move America Forward has collected over 50,000 signatures on petitions calling for the "U.N. to Get Out of the U.S."

The 50,000 signatures have been collected in just two weeks time and the rate of new signatures is growing exponentially.

"This explosive response is even better than we saw for the Recall Gray Davis effort," said Howard Kaloogian, one of the activists behind both campaigns. "The Oil-for-Arms money-laundering scandal has made the United Nations program the largest source financing terror in the world. Americans overwhelmingly agree, the U.S. must not knowingly harbor a terrorist-financing organization, neither should we contribute financially."

Move America Forward is about to launch a national television ad campaign to bolster its effort, in addition to television and radio advertising in the New York metropolitan area. The ad campaign will coincide with the resumption of congressional hearings into the U.N. oil-for-food scandal.

"It was bad enough to see the U.N. deteriorate into a body that embraced an anti-American agenda," said Kaloogian. "To add financial injury to insult, now the U.N. wants us to give it an interest-free loan of $1.3 billion, or support U.N. bonds, to construct a new palace. And even then the U.S. has to pay back 22 percent of that loan in the form of our annual financial contribution to the U.N. Let them build their new facility in a country that wants their presence, like France or Kosovo."

I've just returned from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Naval Air Station base where we did three shows for the troops and toured several locations around the post visiting with some of the finest military personnel on planet earth. The kids seemed to really enjoy the shows and especially liked "This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag" and "In America". We had a great time with them.

We saw Camp X-Ray, where the Taliban detainees are being held only from a distance, but I picked up a lot of what's going on there from talking with a lot of different people.

The truth of the matter is that this operation is under a microscope. The Red Cross has an on site presence there and watches everything that goes on very closely. The media is not telling you the whole truth about what's going on over there. The truth is that these scum bags are not only being treated humanely, but they are probably better off healthwise and medically than they've ever been in their lives. They are fed well, able to take showers and receive state of the art medical care. And have their own Moslem chaplain. I saw several of them in a field hospital ward where they were being treated in a state of the art medical facility.

America's UN Ambassador RESIGNS!

The tumultuous times at the United Nations continues. While news accounts reveal a growing scandal where UN officials collaborated with Saddam Hussein to scam the Oil For Food program (and send millions if not billions of dollars to terrorist groups), pressure has grown on UN General Secretary Kofi Annan to resign.

However, in a shocking development, it was the US Ambassador to the United Nations - not Kofi Annan - who has resigned.

John Danforth - a respected former U.S. Senator - has stepped down from his post after just five months on the job.

No reason for his resignation has been given.

Shays Sees UN Oil For Food Scandal Growing

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) believes the United Nations Oil for Food scandal will grow as the investigation continues. Several House and Senate panels are looking into evidence that suggests Saddam Hussein skimmed billions of dollars from the program that was to allow the Iraqi dictator to sell oil under the supervision of the international body.

During a web cast interview last week on "Jeff Gannon's Washington", Shays said that the debacle would "keep getting bigger."

"It is a scandal of gargantuan proportions," Shays added.

Another Report Straight from Baghdad

Dear Friends and Family:

I am addressing this letter to you to express a frustration that I know has been voiced time and again, yet is met with little change. It concerns the media coverage of this war and the effect of that coverage on the morale of our troops. As a battalion chaplain I hear the comments and complaints of soldiers who, while performing an incredibly difficult job under hostile and stressful conditions, constantly see their efforts portrayed as futile. NBC's coverage this morning (your Thursday evening, 16 September 2004) is a prime example that I believe shows the gulf that exists between the truth of what is happening here and the deceitful agenda of the mainstream media at home and abroad.

Only 24 hours ago the NBC media crew arrived here and filmed hours of footage with our unit. They were told of numerous projects in which our unit is involved, not only in the area of force protection and Troop Medical Clinic support, but also in humanitarian aide to a local village here in Baghdad. Here is an example of some of the projects to which they were introduced:

1. The reconstruction and furnishing of a clinic

2. Miscellaneous enhancements for a local elementary school and a local day care center

3. Reconstruction of the decimated electrical, sewer and water systems

4. Reparation of exterior walls and gates surrounding the village

5. Rubble and garbage removal projects to clean up the entire village

6. Construction of a protective chain link fence around the local Shi'a Mosque

7. Studies to examine the development of agricultural systems and a garment industry to help the locals provide for themselves

8. The ever-growing clothing and school supplies drive for the children of the village

In the roughly one minute clip that they drew from their day of filming, what did they show? The First Lieutenant who is the primary driver of these projects was shown with one quote about never believing he would be in Iraq, Being a National Guard soldier. This was followed by their interview of another soldier's wife, saying her husband was supposed to have retired this summer, that his responsibility to the military should be over and that he should be home. They showed NOTHING of the great humanitarian efforts that are going on here!

It is coverage like this that is convincing more and more soldiers that the consistent media agenda is to show you, the American people, the futility of our current efforts and how everything is going wrong. There is no apparent attempt to show all the good that is happening that, for those of us who are here, far outweighs the very weak, though spectacular, moments of insurgency. And we see it via satellite, just as you do. In a day of great violence across the country, last Sunday, where the insurgency failed to take one American life, what one film clip was shown over and over? They showed the lone burning Bradley fighting vehicle, with Iraqis dancing on and around it, waving flags of the insurgency. Out of the thousands of troops who made it safely around Baghdad and the country that day, the media focused on one piece of impressive footage and repeated it over and over until the viewer receives the message that this is all that went on in Iraq today - an insurgent victory. I also remember how the body count, for two days thereafter, was printed in ever-increasing increments, never mentioning who the casualties were - giving the impression that they were American casualties.

The despair and depression, as well as the thankfully limited anti-war sentiment, over our country's efforts in Iraq are not based upon all of the facts. They are rather based on what the media has chosen to show - and what they have chosen NOT to show. The media knows that they can always find those willing to complain, grouse, protest and disagree. And they splash those voices all over their screens and pages, drowning out the voices that will tell you, as I am, that there is good going on here.

There are things going on here you would be proud of, things that would bring tears to your eyes; like the looks of parents whose children are going to school for the first time in years, equipped with pencils, pens and paper and clothed with clean new clothes. There are essential services being provided to people to whom they were denied under the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein. There is a trial going on for that man and at least eleven of his evil cronies who, let us remember, killed over 300,000 people under the watchful eye of the United Nations (pun intended) during the 12 years they had responsibility for the health and welfare of this nation (yes, the same, inept organization that is currently ignoring the Darfur, Sudan slaughter of Christians by Islamic fundamentalists). This was the same time that the oil-for-food program monies were being used to line the pockets of Saddam and his friends and build luxurious palaces like the ones our forces now occupy as headquarters all over this nation. And Saddam all the while complained that it was "American Sanctions" that were killing his people. I don't remember a sanction that required a mass grave.

Please know that the media is NOT giving you the right picture, much less the WHOLE picture. They have an agenda, it is clear, and that agenda does not include the current administration claiming success in this endeavor. It is unclear if their sensationalist "reporting" will change if the administration changes. The one thing I know as I watch the morale of the men who are here doing the job is that every time the enemy's paltry attacks are made out by the media to be marker events in Iraq, it becomes a little harder for soldiers to see value in even the greatest things we are doing. Your care packages, your letters and your constant prayers are the only things that remind us that the majority of thoughtful Americans are truly behind this effort and that what we are doing has great value. Don't let that go. Keep supporting your troops, not just in word, but in action. Remember this: You cannot support the troops AND denigrate the war effort. It is a logical and a practical inconsistency. While the soldier fights the enemy, he needs those behind him to offer support to his back, not daggers. The news media is one of the greatest threats to this war. Just ask a terrorist. Every time he can do something desperate and spectacular and have the effect with one man blowing himself up in a crowd that an entire U.S. Brigade has in securing a city, the media has thrown terror the victory. It is not the side that wins the most ground anymore that is victorious, but the one that can satiate the blood-hungry media. We have given them the stories they need to show how much we are truly doing. The question then must turn to why they have a fascination with making the villain the victor. If we win this war, it may not be much of a story for them, but if we lose it...

Your troops are doing amazing things here - things many of them are not even trained to do, like a medical platoon leader doing public works projects! I hope that either the media start showing the REAL stories here or that you will show your contempt of their deceitfulness with your complaints and, ultimately, with your vote. Don't watch the news media that thrives on the death of American soldiers to bump their ratings! And remember your troops.

Support of victory is support of your troops.

It is called "WMD Al Qaeda" and it focuses on newly discovered Iraqi Intelligence Service documents that show Saddam Hussein possessed WMDs "not long before" the US invasion of Iraq. Sources believed to be "extremely reliable" have told Move America Forward that the documents have been reviewed and determined to be authentic by DOD and DIA officials. Move America Forward Vice Chair, Melanie Morgan: "We're going to take the truth directly to the American people so they can understand why the war in Iraq is such a vital component in the fight against terrorism" (release, 10/26).

After we received word that Department of Defense and Defense Intelligence Agency analysts have reviewed the purported Iraqi Intelligence Service documents reported in a CNS News Special Report we knew that SOMEONE had to bypass the media to tell the American people the truth. It appears Iraq did indeed possess Weapons of Mass Destruction shortly before the U.S. led invasion, and had more extensive ties to Al Qaeda than has been reported by the U.S. press corps.

First Hand Report from a Marine in Iraq

Note: We received a copy of this email from a brave Marine serving in Iraq. I hope you take the time to read it to appreciate the sacrifices the young men and women of our Armed Forces are making to keep our nation safe. These men and women deserve our unending respect and gratitude.

All,

Hope you are all well.

I attended, today, the Memorial Service for Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt, aged Twenty-two, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a member of 1st Platoon, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines. Killed In Action, 12 October 2004, during combat action in Yusufiyah, Iraq, during patrolling efforts to secure and clear the town of all terrorist forces.

Two days ago, 12 October 2004, I had the honor, privilege, and the extremely sad duty to escort the body of Lance Corporal Wyatt from Yusufiyah to our Battalion Forward Operating Base at Muhmadiyah for further transportation and movement back to his family.

Lance Corporal Wyatt has also been recommended for the posthumous awarding of a Combat Decoration for valor, in light of his efforts during the ambush of his patrol squad, during the conduct of which he died.

The Memorial Service today was a celebration of his service, his efforts, and his dedication to the mission, that we continue. His loss was not a sacrifice in any sense of the word. It was simply, a loss; to his comrades, his unit, and most especially to his family.

He died, covering the other three members of his fireteam, and the other twelve members of his squad, as a whole, during the attack. His efforts were in keeping with the best traditions of the United States Naval Service, in general. And with the best combat traditions of the United States Marine Corps, in specific.

This was not our first loss, nor will it most likely be our last, with the months that we still have on deck here on the ground in this country. All our young Marines like Lance Corporal Wyatt continue, daily, to do their jobs, knowing, first hand, the difference they are making here.

People continue to come forward, offering information, thanking these Marines for their presence, and the peace of mind and sense of security that it brings. The honest people here, the simple people, only want a better future for their children, and they see the hope, and the future, that is offered by the service of our young Marines, like Lance Corporal Wyatt.

What they are doing here, and the difference they are making, literally with their lives, must never be forgotten by our citizens.

Four months ago, none of us here had any idea of where in the hell Yusufiyah even was.

Lance Corporal Wyatt, Rest In Peace, knowing that, indeed, you made a difference. May God preserve and protect you, forevermore.

I know a lot of you are doing this already, but I would ask that you take a simple moment each day, in remembrance of these outstanding young Marines, and keep them in your hearts and prayers.

Conservative group to show film it says counters `9/11'

A Washington, D.C.-based conservative advocacy group is sponsoring a Thursday night showing of a film it says is a counterpoint to ``Fahrenheit 9/11,'' the Michael Moore film critical of President George W. Bush.

Organizers call ``Celsius 41.11: the Temperature at Which the Brain Begins to Die'' an antidote to Moore's film, which they say is factually inaccurate.

Celsius 41.11, which is rated R, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Spangenberg Theatre, 780 Arastradero Road. Tickets are expected to be around $20 each, said Joe Commendatore, a Mountain View resident and a local volunteer for Washington, D.C.-based Citizens United.

Proceeds will support Citizens United and Move America Forward, both of which support conservative causes.

New tome: War vs. Saddam hit al-Qaeda hard

Beneath all the public reasons for invading Iraq lies a secret war agenda that has paid off in the war on al-Qaeda, according to a leading intelligence analyst.

``The Bush administration has been represented as strategically stupid but adept at political manipulation. The opposite is true,'' said George Friedman, president of Stratfor, a firm that delivers global strategic forecasting and open-source intelligence analysis to corporate clients.

Friedman's book, ``America's Secret War: Inside the Hidden Worldwide Struggle Between America and its Enemies,'' which goes on sale Tuesday, argues that midway through the war on terrorism, America has made major gains while al-Qaeda has failed in most of its goals and is on the defensive. Iraq, he argues, is a keystone of American strategy against al-Qaeda.

In the decision to invade Iraq, he argues, disarming a dangerous dictator and bringing democracy to the Middle East were secondary war goals. The factor that tipped the balance in internal Bush administration debates in mid-2002 was Saudi Arabia's recalcitrance in the war on al-Qaeda, he says.

America's invasion of Iraq put pressure on the Saudis that forced them to act against al-Qaeda sympathizers within Saudi Arabia in ways the Saudis had been unwilling to do, Friedman said.

In the past year, Friedman argues, it has worked. The Saudis, shaken by America's action, has engaged in a ``civil war'' against al-Qaeda, killing operatives, busting up cells and cracking down on the group's financial network.

Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy

(SACRAMENTO) – When 11-year old Adam Johns of Roseville, California heard about the awful terrorist attack in Beslan, Russia, he decided to do something to help ease the pain of those children who survived the attacks.

He formed Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy, and partnered with Move America Forward (www.MoveAmericaForward.org) to collect teddy bears and stuffed animals for the children of Beslan, Russia. Adam wanted to find a way to provide some comfort, ease some of their pain and let them know that the people of the United States were thinking of them and supporting them.

Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy has already collected hundreds of teddy bears, but there are many sad and frightened children in Beslan who need our support, and we need more teddy bears from the people of northern California.

On Tuesday, September 21 at 10:00 AM Russian-American Community Services is coming to pick up the teddy bears we’ve collected. That means we have these next few days to ask the community of Sacramento and the people of northern California to help us.

As you have heard, we lost 7 Marines to a suicide car bomber the other day. We also lost 3 Iraqi Special Forces Soldiers. All were exceptionally brave men. The Marines are from a battalion that has fought as hard or harder than any other here in Iraq. These were the guys that were knee deep in the hardest fighting in Fallujah back in April and who have been going hard ever since. Even more tragic is that they were close to getting out of here.

As heart broke as the Marines of the battalion were, last night they really took it to the insurgents inside of Fallujah. Contrary to what might be in the media, the mission was not "retribution" for the suicide bombing. It was part of a regular operation that was slightly accelerated in light of what happened. We had been watching the city for quite a while and killed many, many terrorists last night. The battle lasted for hours and hours later, we were still getting secondary explosions off of objectives that we destroyed. You must have faith that the Marines are giving much better that we get.

Having seen the tragedy in Russia this week we cannot help but shake our heads here and wonder when the rest of the civilized world will wake up and realize that we are in the middle of a struggle for civilization. History will show that the outcome of this struggle will be no less critical to our collective future than WWII. Islamic Fundamentalism inspired terrorism is mutually exclusive to peaceful coexistence with anyone who does not buy into their twisted view of the world. For the masses of appeasers who are still blabbering on about "dialogue" and concessions, I would simply offer that what transpired in Russia is not an aberration. The enemy we face here is the same one that murdered the children in that school, is the same one that flew the airplanes in the towers, and is the same one that bombed the train in Spain.

I wanted to share with you a column by Ben Stein, contrasting the "stars" of Hollywood and the true "stars" - those heroic men and women of our armed forces.

How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is "eonlineFINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started.

I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end. It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it.

On a small scale, Morton's, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.

Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.

How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails. They can be interesting, nice people but they are not heroes to me any longer.

A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets.

Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world.

A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him. A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.

The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists. We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.

I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton's is a big subject. There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament....the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive. The orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery, the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children, the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards. Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse.

Now you have my idea of a real hero. We are not responsible for the operation of the universe, and what happens to us is not terribly important.

God is real, not a fiction, and when we turn over our lives to Him, he takes far better care of us than we could ever do for ourselves. In a word, we make ourselves sane when we fire ourselves as the directors of the movie of our lives and turn the power over to Him.

I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters. This is my highest and best use as a human.

I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin....or Martin Mull or Fred Willard--or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman or as good a writer as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them. But I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my main task in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis and then into a coma and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.

This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York. I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others. He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human.

For U.S. combat troops, the stakes in November couldn't be higher. They're in the unique position of choosing their commander in chief, while fighting a war that will factor in many voters' minds when ballots are cast.

Supporting Our Troops - When They Return Home

This story that appeared online at the "Navy Newstand" reminds us that our troops need support when they return home as well. A program called "Courage to Care" helps our troops to reintegrate back into their families after surviving the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whether it's taking care of a soldier who's lost his legs or whether it's taking care of a child with chronic diabetes, we forget what it means and how much of a family's energy goes to those activities," said the retired Air Force colonel. Intervening In Iraq - Why the U.S. Was Right

What's particularly compelling about this opinion piece is that the author was chief of staff for Alain Madelin, former secretary of finance for French President Jacques Chirac.

I thought that having someone who used to work in the Chirac Administration supporting the War in Iraq warranted your attention.

"Indeed, there is no room for balancing, nor for regrets. In the light of the above facts, President Bush's decision was responsible and legitimate. International law was not despised, it merely showed its limits and should be reconsidered and even rebuilt in the light of warfare changes. And at least now, there's hope for democracy in Iraq, even if the fight for it will be hard. But it is worth fighting."

A Country Not a Cause

I found this essay by Amir Taheri interesting. He does a good job of defining what is at stake in post-war Iraq and he deftly casts aside the side-arguments by some with agendas of blocking progress for the Iraqi people.

Here's an excerpt:

A COUNTRY, NOT A CAUSE

By AMIR TAHERI

What is the real issue in Iraq today? It is to create a new government whose legitimacy is based on free elections. Opponents of the democratic option, however, constantly try to shift the focus to other issues.

For example, they say the Arabs are humiliated because non-Arab armies changed an Arab regime. Well, the reason that that happened is simple: Saddam created a regime that could not be overthrown by the Iraqi people alone, and there were no Arab armies to come to the rescue. So the Americans led a coalition that liberated the people of Iraq from their oppressor.

Does that amount to a political version of the original sin? Should the Iraqis be forced to live under another despotic regime simply to cure the Arabs of their supposed humiliation?

The U.S.-led Coalition was able to enter Iraq because Iraq had been denied normal, not to say democratic, politics for half a century. The only way to get the Coalition out of Iraq is to allow that country to have normal democratic politics. Car bombs, throat-cutting, hostage-taking and hiding in shrines will not drive the Coalition out. Only a freely elected government can ask it to withdraw in accordance with the latest resolution by the U.N. Security Council.

By opposing democratization, Sadr, Saddam and Zarqawi are, in fact, prolonging the country's occupation. Free elections in Iraq would not only spell the end of occupation but could also end all three careers.

The Iraqi people should do all they can to prevent their country from becoming a "cause" for pan-Arabists and Islamists. Iraqis want a country in which they could live as normal human beings. They don't want a cause for which they die while other Arabs nurse their humiliation.

Millions of people who invest in public pension plans can act to deny upward of $70 billion to nations that finance, train, arm and otherwise sponsor terrorist enemies of the United States. The Center for Security Policy, in a report titled "Terrorist Investment of the 50 States" (www.DivestTerror.org), identifies where much of this money goes and through which companies.

There can be little doubt about the effect of keeping such immense sums out of the hands of the Iranian, Libyan, Syrian, North Korean and Sudanese regimes. They would have less money to fund their terrorist allies, less money to buy or build weapons of mass destruction, less money to threaten U.S. interests and allies. It might even precipitate the sort of cash-flow crisis that ultimately destroyed the Soviet Union — catalyzing regime changes where they would do the most good without firing a shot.

The Real Iraq Story
Americans don’t often get the right picture out of Iraq.

How insightful is the Iraq reporting that you've been consuming? Take a little test.

If I tell you that scores of Iraqi detainees have been killed and maimed this year in Abu Ghraib prison, you may not be surprised. But you're probably guessing wrong about who hurt them. The moronic American guards who are now on trial for improperly humiliating some Iraqis caused no deaths or injuries: The many casualties in the prison were all inflicted by Iraq's guerilla terrorists.

During this spring's frenzy of reporting on the plight of detainees at Abu Ghraib, I was surprised that none of the stories mentioned what anyone who has spent time at the prison (as I have) knows is the central danger to the prisoners there. By far the gravest threats to the Iraqis in that facility are the mortars and rockets that guerillas regularly lob into the compound — knowing full well that the main victims of their indiscriminate assaults will be fellow Iraqis. One attack on April 21 of this year, for instance, killed 22 detainees and injured another 91.

The number-one priority for Arabs and Americans concerned about the rights of Iraqi detainees, therefore, ought to be eliminating the merciless assaults of the terrorist insurgents. The sexual indignities imposed by the prison's rogue guards would have to come second on any sensible list.

Shouldn't the reporting on Abu Ghraib have provided some context along those lines? Wouldn't a fuller media presentation of these facts on the ground in Iraq have given the public a better perspective on the various problems at the prison?

Or take another of the Iraq stories most loudly trumpeted in our media: the electricity shortages. You know Baghdad continues to suffer periodic blackouts — news reports remind us of that ad nauseum. Just one more example of U.S. ineffectiveness in this war: The generating system is broken and nothing gets fixed, right?

Wrong. Despite continuing efforts by guerillas to sabotage the grid, Iraq is now generating more electricity than existed in the country before the war. So why do we continue to hear about shortages? Two reasons:

First, Saddam shamelessly hogged the country's electricity in his capital, shunting 57 percent to Baghdad while the provinces were starved for juice. Today, power is distributed fairly to all population centers, and Baghdad gets 28 percent of the total. Though that means occasional shortages in privileged neighborhoods unused to such things, Iraqis as a whole are better off.

Second, Iraq is in the midst of a consumer surge. The economy will grow an estimated 60 percent this year. Iraqis, who have flocked to cell phones and imported a million cars, are also snatching up washing machines, air conditioners, and electronic devices never before available to them. A third of the country now has satellite TV. Electricity demand is thus rising even faster than the steady increases in generation.

As I head off to Baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in Iraq, I wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media. They have done a very poor job of covering everything that has happened. I am sorry that I have not been able to visit all of you during my two week leave back home. And just so you can rest at night knowing something is happening in Iraq that is noteworthy, I thought I would pass this on to you. This is the list of things that has happened in Iraq recently: (Please share it with your friends and compare it to the version that your paper is producing.)

* Over 400,000 kids have up-to-date immunizations.
* School attendance is up 80% from levels before the war.
* Over 1,500 schools have been renovated and rid of the weapons stored there so education can occur.
* The port of Uhm Qasar was renovated so grain can be off-loaded from ships faster.
* The country had its first 2 billion barrel export of oil in August.
* Over 4.5 million people have clean drinking water for the first time ever in Iraq.
* The country now receives 2 times the electrical power it did before the war.
* 100% of the hospitals are open and fully staffed, compared to 35% before the war.
* Elections are taking place in every major city, and city councils are in place.
* Sewer and water lines are installed in every major city.

An interesting report by Staff Sgt. Jason Lake of the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing Public Affairs unit. The first steps in building a trust (trust but verify comes to mind) between Iraqi and American pilots.

7/22/2004 - BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFPN) -- Two former enemies came together for lunch in the spirit of friendship July 20.

Six Iraqi air force pilots and 10 American pilots shared stories over lunch at a dining facility and then took pictures together in front of an F-16 Fighting Falcon here.

Despite speaking two vastly different languages, the pilots had no problems understanding each other. Like American pilots, the Iraqi pilots used hand gestures to describe the details of their adventures.

"There is a special language between us pilots," said Col. Khaled Khadem, the former deputy commander at Balad Air Base before Operation Iraqi Freedom began. "We like to talk with our hands."

Afghans optimistic about recovery from war, favor Karzai, poll shows

(AP) - KABUL, Afghanistan - Two-thirds of Afghans say they are optimistic about the future but remain worried about insecurity and the ravaged economy, according to a survey released Tuesday.

A majority also approved of interim leader Hamid Karzai, the favorite in landmark presidential elections set for Oct. 9, according to a poll that claims it is the most extensive yet on Afghan public opinion.

Of those questioned, only 13 percent favored the ousted Taliban regime, saying they favored governance of the United Nations. Two-thirds approved of the United States involvement which ousted the repressive Islamic militia in late 2001.

The family of U.S. Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone was shocked to learn that video footage of the major's Arlington National Cemetery burial was included by Michael Moore in his movie "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Stone was killed in March 2003 by a grenade that officials said was thrown into his tent by Sgt. Hasan K. Akbar, who is on trial for murder.

It's been a big shock, and we are not very happy about it, to say the least," Kandi Gallagher, Stone's aunt and family spokeswoman, tells Washington Times reporter Audrey Hudson.

We are furious that Greg was in that casket and cannot defend himself, and my sister, Greg's mother, is just beside herself," Gallagher said. "She is furious. She called him a 'maggot that eats off the dead.'"

Marines give Iraqi man new spring in his step

CAMP BLUE DIAMOND, Iraq(July 12, 2004) -- Mohammed Jadaam thought he'd never walk again after losing his leg following an improvised explosive device attack in Ramadi last year.

When Maj. Gen. James N. Mattis, commander of 1st Marine Division, heard of Mohammed's situation, he wanted medical personnel from the division to help the 25-year-old man.

Navy Capt. John M. Williams, public health officer for the division's civil affairs team, met with Mohammed in May and gave him a complete medical examination to see what kind of help he required.

"When I first met him, he was not very talkative and seemed depressed," Williams said. "There wasn't a whole lot of color in his face and he was about thirty pounds lighter."

Mohammed was driving a friend home one night in April 2003 when anti-Iraqi fighters detonated a homemade bomb near his car. The bomb sent razor-sharp shrapnel flying, which tore through Mohammed's car and severely injured him. After the bomb went off, the attackers fired machine guns at Mohammed and his friend.

"I remember the bomb going off and then when I woke up, I was in the hospital," said Mohammed, whose father is Gen. Hobaisy Jadaam, the chief of Iraqi police in the Al Anbar Province.

Let me do another one of my disclaimer numbers right at the top: In Iraq worked with several people whom I knew to be employees of the Central Intelligence Agency. I worked with others whom I assumed to be CIA officers, although it never actually came up in the course of conversation. In all cases I found these folks to be honest with me, courageous in carrying out their assignments and, above all, patriots.

In real life I also am acquainted with people I know to be officers in the CIA and others whom I assume to work for one US intelligence service or another. I have found them to be people with whom I would go into any war zone, any time.

I cannot be the only person on the planet Earth who thinks the people who labor in the shadows, trying to protect our safety and, in some cases, dying to protect our nation should be honored and cheered, not held up to scorn and ridicule as we have seen these past few weeks by the Edwards/Kerry ticket and the Michael Moore Liberals who support it.

I have been to CIA headquarters - although not for a while. In the CIA there is a marble wall into which, as of this writing, 83 stars are carved. They represent the intelligence officers who have died in the service of their country. 48 are named in a book attached to the wall.

Thirty Five are anonymous. Only a star carved in a marble wall revealing a nation's gratitude.

I made friends with an officer in Iraq. We met on occasion and talked, as friends do, not about what we're doing in our jobs, but about … about things.

About a month after we met I dialed my friend's phone and was told that he had "left for home."

I feared my friend had been killed. I'm certain I never knew my friend's real name.

I am not sure where Paul Krugman and Michael Moore were on 9/11, but I was with President Bush for almost two hours. As commander of the 8th Air Force, I was present when President Bush stopped to deliver a message to the American people at Barksdale Air Force Base. Throughout my career, I have seen the best and the worst of people under extreme pressure. President Bush arrived at Barksdale deeply saddened and obviously concerned, but he was a man on a mission, courageous and decisive. He was totally in command. I have kept relatively quiet about my experiences with the president on 9/11, but I cannot sit back and allow Hollywood and the media to rewrite history. I was there, and I consider myself a good judge of leadership. We were fortunate that President Bush was our commander in chief on 9/11.

Dragoons continue to reach out to Iraqi community, provide support

NAJAF, Iraq -- The 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment spent a year in Baghdad, helping the people of that city rebuild their lives and regain their livelihood. When the “Dragoons” received orders to move into southern Iraq, they continued to help Iraqis living in Najaf. The people of this city have been receptive of the troopers, and the “Iron Dukes” of 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment.

On May 20, elements of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd ACR, visited a school on the outskirts of Najaf to distribute school supplies, boxes of candy, and t-shirts that had the words “prosperity,” “progress” and “Iraq” in English and Arabic.

Marines sign contract aiding underprivileged Iraqi scholars

CAMP HABBANIYAH, Iraq(July 9, 2004) -- Making small steps to repair Iraq's ailing educational system, Marines here signed a contract with a local Iraqi government official July 1, 2004, to give Iraqi school children some of the learning tools they need.

The agreement is part of an ongoing effort by Marines intended to improve the quality of life in Al Kabani, a small fishing village in western Iraq..

The children in the town have been using the same makeshift desks for years. Furniture like blackboards and bookshelves, which the village's teachers said would improve the learning environment for the students, are hard to come by.

A majority of Americans, according to a recent poll, now call going into Iraq a mistake. Many Iraqis apparently failed to get the memo.

A poll commissioned by the Coalition Provisional Authority found 63 percent of Iraqis expect conditions to improve after the takeover of the interim government.

Four years ago, Iraq's unemployment rate stood between 60 and 75 percent. The current estimated rate is now at approximately 30 percent — high by our standards, but a dramatic decline since the fall of Saddam's regime.

Marines train Iraqi Special Forces for security role

CAMP AL ASAD, Iraq(June 26, 2004) -- For nearly two weeks Marines with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion's Company B trained Iraq's most experienced elite force - former Republican Guard.

The 11-day one-time event helped the Marines gain valuable lessons from men who first fought during the Iraq-Iran War, during the 1980s.

"These guys are pretty old," said 1st Sgt. Octaviano Gallegos Jr., company first sergeant from Las Cruces, N.M. "They're anywhere from their late thirties to fifties. Most of them are old and look out of shape, but they're fierce."

The Iraqi group has been working directly for Coalition Forces since the fall of Saddam's regime, joining different units throughout Iraq, patrolling towns in search of anti-coalition forces.

"These guys are very loyal to their country," Gallegos said. "They were never loyal to Saddam's regime. So once his regime fell, they were some of the first men to join the Coalition Forces in helping provide security for the country."

NEW YORK — When Saddam Hussein (search) is indicted on criminal charges, it will be by people he committed countless atrocities against during his 30-year dictatorship.

Iraq took legal custody of Saddam from the U.S. Army on Wednesday and he is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday where he will be formally charged.

What exactly those charges will be however, is unclear — especially since the so-called "Butcher of Baghdad" not only oversaw the murders of Iraqis, but of Kurds, Iranians, Kuwaitis and others.

"It's going to take a while to prepare complicated trials like that," said Walter Russell Mead, senior fellow in U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations (search). "In one sense, you have so many crimes to choose from, which ones are you going to accuse him of?"

Saddam will be tried by the Iraqi Special Tribunal (search), which covers four types of crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and violations of specific Iraqi laws, including trying to manipulate judges, squandering of public assets and funds and the "threat of war or use of the armed forces of Iraq against an Arab country," a crime in Iraq since 1958.

I would like to let you know that I found your comments encouraging
Children to see Fahrenheit 9/11, "through" their parents, despite its R rating, as extraordinarily irresponsible.

The rating is there so *parents* can determine what their children see.
Your encouragement is essentially suggesting that strangers, like you and Mr. Moore, have the right to go to people's homes and encourage children to ignore their parents and disobey them.

Who are you to suggest this?

You have every right to release the film. How dare you, though, suggest that parents have lost the right to raise their children based on their values. Considering your attitude, I would think you don't have children, but think about the repercussions if a stranger approached children important to you and told them to ignore your instructions?

Or if strangers walked into your office and suggested your staff follow
*their* orders and not yours? I think that's something you wouldn't appreciate.

Please consider retracting that comment, and encourage children to respect what an "R" rating is for (whether you like it or not) and that respecting their parents wishes is of paramount importance.

If you *don't* agree with those two principles, I think that, too, would be fascinating to Americans.

Please do the right thing.

Common Heroism of Our Men & Women of the Armed Forces

Excuse me if this is too late...I was in Bridgeport, Ca (MCMWTC) last week for a workshop...and am just now plowing through the 200+ e-mails.

This picture is of Cpl Jim Wright, who lost both hands to an RPG in Iraq...quite a leadership story in itself. Our CG, MajGen T. Jones, has befriended this fine Marine (and others) recuperating at Walter Reed and Bethesda, and his story of Cpl Wright brings tears to ones' eyes. Most telling was after Cpl Wright told MajGen Jones his story (lost both hands and also rec'd a serious wound in the upper thigh)...the general asked him how he kept awake and from going into shock. The Cpl replied: "Sir, I couldn't pass out...I was in charge!"

That is what our young leaders are made out of!

A Real Hero

Maybe you'd like to hear about something other than idiot Reservists and naked Iraqis.

Maybe you'd like to hear about a real American, somebody who honored the uniform he wears.

Meet Brian Chontosh.

Churchville-Chili Central School class of 1991. Proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Husband and about-to-be father. First lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

And a genuine hero.

The secretary of the Navy said so yesterday.

At 29 Palms in California Brian Chontosh was presented with the Navy Cross, the second highest award for combat bravery the United States can bestow.

That's a big deal.

But you won't see it on the network news tonight, and all you read in Brian's hometown newspaper was two paragraphs of nothing. Instead, it was more blather about some mental defective MPs who acted like animals.

The odd fact about the American media in this war is that it's not covering the American military. The most plugged-in nation in the world is receiving virtually no true information about what its warriors are doing.

Oh, sure, there's a body count. We know how many Americans have fallen. And we see those same casket pictures day in and day out. And we're almost on a first-name basis with the pukes who abused the Iraqi prisoners. And we know all about improvised explosive devices and how we lost Fallujah and what Arab public-opinion polls say about us and how the world hates us.

We get a non-stop feed of gloom and doom.

But we don't hear about the heroes.

The incredibly brave GIs who honorably do their duty. The ones our grandparents would have carried on their shoulders down Fifth Avenue.

The ones we completely ignore.

Like Brian Chontosh.

It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee.

When all hell broke loose.

Ambush city.

The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades.
And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him.

So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety.

As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire.

It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish.

And Brian Chontosh gave the order to attack. He told his driver to floor the humvee directly at the machine
gun emplacement that was firing at them. And he had the guy on top with the .50 cal unload on them.

Within moments there were Iraqis slumped across the machine gun and Chontosh was still advancing, ordering his driver now to take the humvee directly into the Iraqi trench that was attacking his Marines.

Over into the battlement the humvee went and out the door Brian Chontosh bailed, carrying an M16 and a Beretta and 228 years of Marine Corps pride.

And he ran down the trench.

With its mortars and riflemen, machineguns and grenadiers.

And he killed them all.

He fought with the M16 until he was out of ammo. Then he fought with the Beretta until it was out of ammo.

Then he picked up a dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo.

Then he picked up another dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo.

At one point he even fired a discarded Iraqi RPG into an enemy cluster, sending attackers flying with its grenade explosion.

When he was done Brian Chontosh had cleared 200 yards of entrenched Iraqis from his platoon's flank.

He had killed more than 20 and wounded at least as many more.

But that's probably not how he would tell it.

He would probably merely say that his Marines were in trouble, and he got them out of trouble. Hoo-ah, and drive on.

"By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of heavy enemy fire, and utmost devotion to duty, 1st Lt. Chontosh reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."

That's what the citation says.

And that's what nobody will hear.

That's what doesn't seem to be making the evening news.

Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity.

It makes you wonder if the role of the media is to inform, or to depress - to report or to deride. To tell the truth, or to feed us lies.

But I guess it doesn't matter.

We're going to turn out all right.

As long as men like Brian Chontosh wear our uniform.

Terrorist Group Hezbollah: Endorses Michael Moore's Anti-Military Film

We've said from Day 1 that Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" was an attempt by Moore to undermine the War on Terrorism so he could achieve his political goal of defeating President Bush.

To further bolster that argument - that Moore wants nothing more than for the U.S. to lose the fight against terrorism - today's London newspaper "The Guardian" reports that the terrorist organization, Hezbollah, is trying to help promote the movie.

According to the U.S. State Department, Hezbollah is responsible for the deaths of over 300 Americans as a result of terrorist attacks committed by the group. The most notorious was the horrific 1983 Hezbollah attack on the Marine barracks in Lebanon.

Despite Hype Movie Theaters are Rejecting "Fahrenheit 9/11"

Hi, this is Melanie Morgan - Vice Chair of Move America Forward and host of KSFO 560 AM (San Francisco) radio program "Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan Show."

I'm honored to work with my friend, Howard Kaloogian, on this important cause to rally Americans to stand united behind the men and women of the armed forces and their mission: fighting the war on terrorism around the world (including in Iraq and Afghanistan).

I've received some interesting information that I wanted to share with you about the hype you've been hearing about Michael Moore's movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" and how widespread the distribution of it will be. Don't believe the lies.

Michael Moore originally boasted that distributors had secured committments to show "Fahrenheit 9/11" in over 1,000 theaters.

Then he said about 1,000 theaters would show the film.

Then he was down to 'at least' 700 theaters would show the film.

Next it was 'at least' 500 theaters would show his propaganda.

Well, as of today when I looked up the theaters on his website I got a total of 417. It seems that the movie theater operators have gotten the message that Michael Moore's anti-American propaganda, his attacks on our troops, his misleading accounts and distortions are rejected by most Americans.

But we still need more help from you. Pick a theatre in your neighborhood that is showing Farehneit 9/11. Find the e-mail address from the list we've provided and let them know what you think of this effort to discredit America's fight on Radical Islamists. If there isn't one, pick another and make that small effort to communicate with the corporate moguls who profit from this slur on our families, friends and neighbors who are risking their lives in this battle to keep the rest of us safer. And then forward our website to others who will support us.

It's been impossible to miss the media's obsession with Michael Moore and his new film, "Fahrenheit 9/11" which attacks our troops, the war on terrorism and President Bush.

Moore has recently insulted the airplane passengers of 9/11 ("The kind of people who fly in airplanes want someone else to clean up their mess; that’s why they let hijackers take the plane. The passengers on September 11 were scaredy-cats, because they were mostly white.") and our troops ("Half the movie is about Iraq – we were able to get film crews embedded with American troops without them knowing it was Michael Moore. They are totally f***ed.”)

Michael Moore has the right to free speech. He has the right to make this movie. But, you know what? We, the American people, have a right to raise our objections to his crass anti-American jihad.

We have a right to tell movie theaters we object to their promoting a movie that is nothing more than a political campaign commercial which should be shown at the Democrat National Convention or as an Al Qaeda training video before it's shown at our local cinema.

Good news a well-kept secret

When you hear the words Guantanamo Bay, the words Abu Ghraib seem to echo back.

But I was in Guantanamo for three days last week, and I saw something very different. I concluded that, at Gitmo, we extract information from prisoners not by torture but by developing rapport with them. It involves amenities. Full rolls of toilet paper. Fruit baskets. A field trip barbecue. I talked to prisoners, visited cell blocks, surveyed their medical care, interviewed the base commander and chief interrogator on my show, and allowed callers to probe them with questions. My research extended to the officers who escorted me to breakfast and lunch - even to times when all parties were well lubricated at the Tiki Bar.

The leadership at Gitmo is much more disciplined and focused than the leadership of Maj. Gen. Janis Karpinski at Abu Ghraib appears to have been. Soldiers at Gitmo say they are repulsed by the photos and stories from Abu Ghraib. Senior staff told me of strict patrols of the prison to make sure all is being done properly.

Another great contrast with Abu Ghraib was the interrogator I met at Camp Delta. She was fluent in Arabic and talked about various ways she was able to reach prisoners. She's not leading anyone around in a dog collar.

One story probably summarized best what I saw at Gitmo. I was sitting in a chair in one of the interrogation rooms at Camp Delta when the chief interrogator told me the chair wheels were one of their greatest tools. Some sort of torture device? No: The wheels let interrogators slide in closely to bond with prisoners when they believe they are telling the truth and move away when they are lying.

This mentality is the legacy of Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Miller, who is accused of taking his "brutal" tactics from Gitmo to Iraq and causing the prison scandal. I can't know what Miller did in Iraq, but I think most of us would find the system he put in place in Gitmo as humane and fair treatment for captured Taliban and al-Qaeda members. In fact, a number of my listeners felt the treatment was too good for people we have reason to believe are among the worst of the terrorists.

This picture of humane treatment isn't being widely disseminated by other media sources. Their agenda seems to be that if they can't find a horror story, then there's no story to report. But it should be big news, to stand in contrast to Abu Ghraib.

Humane treatment works not only to get information but also to dissuade significant numbers of these guys away from their urges to attack and kill Americans. In fact, 144 prisoners have been sent back home and have been judged to be a threat to us no longer. I was amazed to consider that we are reaching good numbers of these former al-Qaeda and Taliban members.

I can't say whether the information they are getting at Gitmo is really helping to prevent attacks. I can say they are staying patient and positive.

At Gitmo, they are beginning to assemble military tribunals for four inmates. These were called for by President Bush and, if approved by the Supreme Court, will begin later this summer. This promises to put the American system of justice on view for all the world. For example, Osama bin Laden's driver is at Guantanamo. It will interest many people to know this man has a lawyer - a U.S. military officer who, as I found out, intends to mount a detailed and aggressive defense of his client.

So it's not that the American people can't handle the truth. It's that they are not getting enough of the truth. A visit to Guantanamo persuaded me that the truth is comforting.

We miss you! I'd like to take a few minutes to pass on what the battalion has been up to during the past thirty days. To say that we have been busy would be the understatement of the decade and I must tell you that your Marines and Sailors have been amazing not only with their flexibility and ability to adapt to changing missions and locations, but they have been amazing in terms of their courage and tenacity.

As of the 19th of April we were still in our original location of
Mahmudiya (about 30 miles South of Bagdhad) and we were making significant progress in developing and improving the relationships and security situation in the four major urban centers of Mahmudiya Qada (county).

XXXX Company had been working in Mahmudiya city proper, XXXX had been focusing its operations in Latifiyah, XXXX in Yusafiyah, XXXX in Rasheed, XXXX across the AO in a Quick Response Force role and our XXXX Company, as always, focuses everywhere supporting every conceivable facet of our operations.

Simultaneously, the 81mm mortar platoon had been making significant strides in training and conducting operations with the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Battalion that had been started under our predecessors in the US Army's 82d Airborne Division.

We had seen an increase in both security and "winning the hearts and minds" through the diligent and compassionate work of our Marines and Sailors, but because we also had pushed our forces into areas that had until now, been unaddressed, we also saw a significant increase in combat operations. The events in Fallujah, Najaf and Karbala that occurred right before and just after Easter resulted in a significant
spike in activity as many radicals and terrorists began to take action wherever they could to try to stir up hate within the populace.

The Warlords responded and at one point the comment of our enemies was that "The marines are everywhere.we can't do anything." At that point the battalion had been conducting intense 24/7 operations since about 4 April to provide a secure environment for the Shiite Arbaeen celebration (40 days following any Muslim holiday-the traditional mourning period-Muslims celebrate an "Arbaeen").

The terrorists changed tactics to try to stop traffic along the major highways and the battalion responded by refocusing its efforts along the main artery running through our area and shut the enemy activity down there completely. Just as we were getting ready to re-energize our efforts throughout the Qada, we received orders to re-embark the entire battalion, move to a completely different base and then begin operations in an entirely new area. We moved our force from Mahmudiya to "Camp Fallujah" west of Baghdad and immediately began split operations. XXXX Company assisted a Marine Battalion to the Northwest of Fallujah at a place called Saclawejah, XXXX assisted another Marine Battalion along the southern portion of Fallujah and the remainder of the Battalion began operations to the Northeast of Fallujah at a place called Al Kharma (also commonly known as "Bad Kharma").

At any rate, each part of the battalion executed combat operations that included some violent engagements with the enemy and the recovery of significant amounts of terrorist weapons, ammunition and bomb making material.

After only about five days, XXXX performed miracles again and the battalion then moved in force to the southern portion of Fallujah and slammed the back door on the terrorists operating in the city. Almost immediately upon our arrival, the battalion became decisively engaged and built on the situation Easy Company had been developing over the
past five days.

XXXX and XXX, supported by Tanks, Armored Vehicles, 81mm mortars and our superb snipers began to wreak havoc upon the terrorists within Fallujah.

After only 48 hours of fighting, the battalion had succeeded in killing between 100 and 200 of the terrorists, leveled a portion of southern Fallujah and in the words of our Regimental Commander "broke the back" of the resistance in Fallujah. Within hours, the terrorists were at the negotiating table proposing a solution that developed in
to what is now known as the Fallujah Brigade. Throughout those intense days, the battalion performed magnificently and earned a very key place in the history of the Regiment's history.

As the Fallujah Brigade entered the city, we reluctantly departed our positions and entered what would be our fourth operating area in less than a month. We are now conducting operations east of Fallujah in an area that had, until now, been largely ignored. Our presence alone brought the rats scurrying out to engage. The result of our operations has been the virtual elimination of indirect fire attacks against key
coalition facilities, the development of millions of dollars of civil affairs projects, the disruption of terrorist operations in what was once on of the most volatile areas in Iraq, and, through the superb efforts of XXXX Company and our Counter Intelligence Teams, the discovery of the largest series of weapons caches in Iraq to date!

Throughout the past month, the Marine's living conditions have varied from a firm base in Mahmudiya where they had access to a gym, internet, showers and two hot meals a day, to fighting holes and 100 degree heat, to bombed out buildings in Fallujah to abandoned
buildings and open fields. Operations have been at once defensive and offensive and have reflected what has become known as the "three block war" where your Marines and Sailors are conducting full up combat on one block, peacekeeping on the next and humanitarian operations on the other. Access to the internet has been spotty at best, but we are now
in a situation where we can rotate platoons back to our current location for showers, hot chow, and a brief period of rest and refit before they re-attack the missions we execute every day.

Snail mail has been regular for the most part given our hobo status, and your cards, letters and packages have been the most welcome thing you can imagine. Mail and the occasional hot shower are the highlights of our existence here and your support through the mail is literally the rock upon which we draw our strength.

Folks - the answer to winning the war on terrorism is not turning over world affairs to the United Nations as many in the news media and far left political activists keep demanding. If we do so, we will heighten the risk that such attacks as that which occurred in Saudi Arabia will happen closer to home. In the past decade we have suffered numerous attacks from Al Qaeda - both on our own soil, abroad and even against our own naval vessels - before our nation finally woke up following the horrific attacks of September 11th.

If we now give up on the War on Terrorism - and the current focus of that effort in Iraq - the consequences of such surrender will be a vulnerability to heightened terrorist attacks here in the United States for which we will never forgive ourselves as a nation and the ramifications of which will haunt us for an eternity.

It saddens me to see the editorial judgment of the mainstream news media. Where is the outrage and the saturation journalism to cover the mistreatment - in this case it's not underpants on the head but execution - of an AMERICAN in Iraq?

Reuters is reporting that a U.S. soldier first listed as killed in action while riding in the same convoy as Jessica Lynch was actually captured by Iraqi forces and then shot to death with two bullets to the back.

Our Troops Are the Most Decent of People

The news media attempts to smear the good name and reputation of ALL of our soldiers (based on the actions of a few). But we know our brave men and women of the armed forces deserve a much higher level of respect. Buried deep in the San Diego Union Tribune is this blurb by columnist Dianne Bell:

All the teachers at Jerabek Elementary School wanted to attend the funeral of Hans Wichary, husband of fifth-grade teacher Jean Chalupsky. So a group of Marines went to the Scripps Ranch campus Friday and, along with teacher volunteers from other city schools, "taught" all the afternoon classes and led students in outdoor exercises. Wichary, 41, died in a bicycle accident May 8.

The Marines, recent Iraq returnees based at Miramar air station, have a bond with Jerabek through their annual Toys for Tots drive and other activities. It seems that here at home the Marines are making a difference, too.

Abu Ghraib Prisoners Were Among the Most Violent and Vile

A great column by Deroy Murdock of National Review reveals that most of the prisoners who were "abused" in Abu Ghraib prison were held for attacks on American and other coalition troops that have killed Americans. Some of those held are believed to have been involved in manufacturing & planting explosive devices.

This is a starkly different picture from what we had originally been told. The media had led us to believe that whole lots of innocent civilians had been caught up in sweeps by U.S.-led forces and those who ended up in Abu Ghraib then suffered the humiliation and abuse made famous in photos and videos we've already seen.

House Democrat Leader Crosses the Line

Shame on Nancy Pelosi, the House Democrat Leader. Pelosi has joined the ranks of Michael Moore, Ted Kennedy and others who have crossed the line in a misguided attempt to derail the War on Terror and President Bush.

Pelosi called Bush "incompetent" and declared that it was obvious that "The emperor has no clothes... When are people going to face the reality? Pull this curtain back."

I think we need to pull the curtain back to expose how dangerous comments by the likes of Congresswoman Pelosi are. We are in a war... a war we must win. And Pelosi and others are leading a "Bash America" and "Bash Bush" campaign without regard to the impact of their actions.

U.S. Hospitals Give Iraqis a 2nd Chance at Life

Today the Washington Post tries to rally sympathy for the treatment of Iraqi prisoners (many of whom attacked and/or killed American soldiers). The Post is determined to do its part to derail the War on Terror and to also defeat President Bush.

Italy's Prime Minister - Vows to Support U.S. To Very End - Bashes Opposition

But far less attention is ever paid to the coalition of countries and their leaders who support America's efforts to weaken terrorist organizations and their attempts to gain a foothold in nation's such as Iraq.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has made it clear - he supports the War in Iraq and has pledged the support of Italian troops to the very end.

Senator James Inhofe: "Iraqi Prisoners Have American Blood on Their Hands"

Senator James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) is one of the few on Capitol Hill to speak out clearly and effectively regarding the Iraqi prisoner abuse issue.

Lost in the saturation journalism and liberal hand-wringing has been the fact that those who were abused, as Inhofe notes, were "murderes, terrorists and insurgents" who have "American blood on their hands."
